H.E.L.P Programs

  • Tegucigalpa Market and Dump Children. (We have combined the two)
  • Mobile Library Program.
  • Danli Market Children Program.
  • Santa Barbara Program.
  • School Desk Program

Program Focus
After three years operating as PROJECT HONDURAS, the focus of the program was examined and it was determined that the name HELP Honduras would more accurately describe the activities of the CRCID Program in Honduras.

These children raised $600 to sponsor 6 Market Children.

The Public School System in Honduras is free, but without uniforms, shoes, books, book bags, and school supplies many children of the working poor cannot attend. HELP HONDURAS will supply those missing articles, but in addition will also supply counseling, monitoring, and tutoring, to increase the success rate of the students. A health component will round out the program. In Tegucigalpa, the operating Rotary NGO, Alternativas Y Opportuniades, (AYO), also provides primary health care, utilizing a daily clinic at the office of AYO where a doctor and nurse are available 5 days a week, every morning. The clinic will look after immunizations and other functions that are not easily available to the children and parents.

The boy in the picture above, left Honduras as a baby. Now he is a grade 4 student at Twin Rivers Elementary in Castlegar. He fled Honduras, and has helped in raising money for the kids still in Honduras.

The Educators employed by AYO to monitor, counsel and arrange tutoring of the students, will also put on preventive health programs, covering subjects such as hygiene, dental care, proper diet, anti substance abuse, AIDES and STD awareness. Parents will attend parenting classes.

The provision of the health and literacy components of the program will be provided by staff largely funded by CRCID. The articles provided to enable school attendance will come from Rotary Clubs, The Rotary Foundation and Individual Rotarians.

The two locations in Tegucigalpa have been providing the health component for some time, but Danli and Santa Barbara, as new programs, have not. Availabilty of funding will determine the progress in those locations.

A secondary focus will be to provide School Desks. These will be built by local shops in Tegucigalpa, and distributed in accordance with the schedule and priorities set by The Ministry of Education.
HELP Honduras will also review possible synergies with the EFA (Education for All) program run by the Ministry of Education.
HELP Honduras will also investigate the possibility of cooperation with other NGOs providing similar services.

A tertiary focus will be to supply additional books for the 5 Mobile Libraries supplied by CRCID and Rotary during the last 4 years. The Mobile Libraries are operated by the University Francisco Morazan in Tegucigalpa and Danli, and by a church in Santa Barbara.
